WCAG 2.2 asks for at least 4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text (24px, or 18.7px bold), and 3:1 for interface components, icons and chart elements. 7:1 is the AAA target for body text.

Simulated with the Machado–Oliveira–Fernandes matrices — a well-founded approximation of dichromatic vision, not a medical instrument. Around 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women see colour this way. Watch the ratio as well as the swatch: protanopia dims reds, which pushes a red further from a light background but collapses it into a dark one.

Swapping does not change the number. Contrast between two colours is one ratio, not two — so the same pair reads the same whichever one is the text. Swap changes which colour the preview draws the words in, which is what makes a pair easy to judge by eye. What genuinely moves the bar is Judge as: body text must reach 4.5:1, while large text and interface components need only 3:1. A colour carrying alpha is measured at full opacity, since what a translucent colour really contrasts with depends on whatever sits behind it.
